""it was clear to me that a sense of belonging, a sense of hope, and mostly, the presence of faith can make all the difference in the lives of these people and all people who live in unthinkable conditions around the world.""
Wow. What a statement.
It is no secret that I stalk Pioneer Woman's blog and love to follow their adventures. Right now her husband, whom she affectionately calls Marlboro Man - cause frankly he does look like the Marlboro Man that used to adorn the billboards - are in the Dominican Republic visiting Compassion International. I encourage you to read about it here.....

Above is something he quoted today. And it just hit me. Applicable not only in an impoverished country but also anyone in the world that deals with adversity every day. Knowing you belong to something, and can have hope and faith can have such an impact on someone's life. You can't have hope without faith...in my life it happens to be faith in God, but I do believe it can be faith in SOMETHING...anything....it is the only explanation on how those living in deplorable conditions can still give thanks for what little they have and live relatively happy, enjoying their day to day. When there is no hope......you can tell. The daily struggle sometimes is how do you give someone hope? They must chose to open their hearts to the hope no matter what you offer, but simply loving and helping I think can give hope. Sometimes the simplest of gestures can affect someone's life more than you know. We can't all go to the DR - but we can smile at someone we pass, put a few coins in the red kettle, help at a soup kitchen, make a meal for a new mom, buy gifts for the donations tree at church....simple every day things. These can soften someone's heart enough to maybe let a little bit of hope in.
I am thankful Marlboro Man is sharing his story. The kids and I are going to seriously go here and make a small difference.
